3D laser scanning Dimensional control

In fabrication and engineering for the offshore, marine, oil and gas sector, accurate dimensional control is critical. Digital Surveys have over 30 years dimensional control experience working in the North sea oil fields and across Norway and Europe.

The technology used in this sector has changed dramatically in this time. From total stations, prisms and tape measures, to advanced super fast 3D laser scanners. Always looking to the forefront of technology Digital Surveys were earlier adopters of 3D laser scanning and have become highly proficient in using this equipment.

3D laser scanning allows the surveyor to rapidly capture millions of dimensionally accurate points of data on site in seconds. This prevents costly shut downs and minimises time in dangerous or hazardous environments.

Laser scanning creates an exact 3D replica of the item being scanned made up of millions of points of data ( A point cloud) This data can then be interrogated directly to very quickly pull off accurate dimensions or it can be converted to solid as built PDMS models allowing designers to virtually test for clash detections and plan for mobilisations.

A 3D laser scan can also provide the final QA in fabrication before the item is shipped to site, providing manufactures and clients with the confidence that all design tolerances have been met.
