Digital Surveys one a competitive tender to provide a detailed full measured building survey of the National Rail Museum. Located in York the Rail museum is the largest in the world and attracts over 1million visitors each year.
The requirements of the survey were to provide detailed internal elevations, sections and reflected ceiling plans of the great hall and entrance foyers. These plans would be used for planned refurbishment and a new entrance to the museum. Due the complexity and size of the area Digital dispatched a 2 man building survey team equipped with MBS software and a scanning team with a ScanStation2 laser scanner.
It was decided to utilise the laser scanners long range to scan the great hall while the surveyors would pick up services and details in the adjoining areas.
The main hall is made up of lots of complex steel work, ventilation pipes and lighting. To try and survey this level of detail with a total station would have been extremely time consuming. By utilising the laser scanner all this information could be capture and then the require level of detail extracted back in the office. In all the project required 5 days on site and 36 full dome scans were carried out.
